Hey,

I was considering trying to salt some freshwater clams to use as bait, but I did remember reading once that some were protected by law.

Much to my surprise I found that one quarter of native southern Ontario species (11 of 41) are endangered.

I quickly forgot my idea to get some from a local river.

In fact "it is illegal to collect live native mussels or their shells without a MNR permit". Read this:

Would that include Zebra mussels? Assuming of course the mussels have already contaminated the area.

I know in saltwater muscles are often my go-to bait.

No Zebra Mussels are not protected. If you end up pulling some weeds or branches out of the water with your hook and you find Zebra Mussels, try to take them off or throw it out ect...
