Most of you know from my posts that I generally support the MNR, and our governments as best I can.

But this is over the top.

They catch a US citizen illegally using an Ontario Resident fishing licence for the last 20 years and he gets a $700 fine................. WTF......... where's the deterrent - or the penalty............ it's probably less than it would have cost for 20 years of buying the proper non-resident licence......................

Here's the article:

Here's the current non resident rates:

IMO - it should have been $700 times 20 years = $14,000. Now that's a deterrent!

Yours sadly,

Edit: up here we may have had EVERYTHING IN OUR POSSESION impounded and upon conviction - lost the boat, motor and all our gear as well...................
Wow... that's terrible.

Penalty should have most definitely been worse.
Youch... kind of an expensive "slap on the wrist" approach while this person was clearly knowingly breaking the rules.
Sounds like he plead the deal out.... Trading off the cost of pursuing a more substantial fine with the cost of more lengthy proceedings.

Don't get me wrong, I think it is a sad state of affairs.

I wonder if the transcripts are available?

Perhaps - but I think this case is pretty much open and shut.
Curious what the fine would be if it was a canadian caught in america?

Yep..another reason I'm glad I'll soon be living in Quebec. The only province to have outright banned fracking...the only province that actually invests in protecting (not selling off) natural resources..
