Ontario Shore Fishing Forum

Hey guys and gals, new to the forums but have been fishing ever since I could walk.
Grew up in Trinidad going sea fishing until I had a close call with a jellyfish and almost died.
This made me stop for a while until I moved to Canada.
Caught my first 1.5lb bass when I was about 14years and now double my age I've been hooked on lake fish and salmon fishing.
I've even introduced my soon to be wife to fishing a few years ago and she has also caught the fever.
I even get the silent treatment when I don't take her with me.
I normally start my season from early May and go on through till about October.
Which is when I focus more on duck and deer hunting.
During my fishing season I go to Campbellford, Trenton, Peterborough, Luther Marsh, and Lake Simcoe.
Decided to join to learn new tips and tricks that I may not have known about.

What were your targeted fish while angling in Trinidad? What gear?

Some of the fish we caught in salt water were redfish, grouper, carite, stingray, shark. Off the shore we got the same minus the shark and stingray. In the local fresh water rivers we fished for guabine, sardine, tilapia, catfish, cascadura (hassar), and the most difficult one freshwater eel. For freshwater I remember using a bamboo rod with an older baitcaster reel, forgot the name. Salwater I used my father's shimano 400 which I still own as it has some sentimental value to me. In Canada I only use Shimano gear, from rod, to reel, to accessories.

Interesting. I enjoyed learning about carite, guabine and hassar.

Were the eels of any size? How did you prepare them to eat?

You prepare them the same as you would prepare shark as there is only 1 center bone to worry about. However I remember we had to cut a piece of the tail off and leave the head on until you finish fillet it. For the skin you basically use a pliers and tear the skin off similar to catfish. To cook it we normally just grill it or deep fry.
