Now you guys got me kicking myself... just this past weekend I was up in Grey County where I have plenty of reliable chub spots, and even got into a school of shiners... I've caught plenty up there with my fail-proof trick of trying to catch trout. Probably won't have occasion to catch more before this weekend. Oh well, I'll be back at the trailer again and hopefully will be able to plan ahead and catch some chubs or shiners. Probably paying for bait this time.

By the way in my pile of fishing stuff I never use I found a jar of those trout bait scented marshmallows... I don't imagine they'd work as catfish bait but is it worth adding one to the hook just to keep it off the bottom? Or better for the bait to sit right on the bottom and not have weird smells that trout are supposed to like?
My second cousin Arnold always smelled a bit weird .......... he didn't catch many trout ........but did attract snails and slugs at night.
Let him know he's invited Wink
Sorry, I should have looped back to follow up on the mission. We didn't catch any catfish this time, but we did learn more about the river and get local tips for next time. I quickly figured out that one can catch chubs right in the river off the property, not as easily as in clearer streams but doable with a little patience. And even without the cats, we weren't totally skunked for lifers:

I suppose that's technically my friend's lifer, not mine, even though I rigged and set the rod... but, that's still fishing.
Looks like it was fun. Good stuff.

Sheepshead - cool......... and it looks like bigger water there (the boat) - might hold some big carp too, and the odd smallmouth.

Cheers,
