I have a trip planned to Oxtongue in August. Any tips on what fish we can expect to hook into during the late August season?

I have heard that there are some large smallmouth in Oxtongue lake. We have some CP swing spinners and also some tube bait jigs. Can anyone provide some advice for smallmouth lures for Oxtongue lake?

For Oxtongue, I heard that Gent Island and Romance Island are good spots to drop a line. Has anyone had luck near the bridge area and if so what species and tactics?

Welcome to OSF.

This time of year I would suggest targeting smallmouth bass in Oxtongue Lake. Tube bait jigs should work - as will Rapala/Rebel/Fat Rap type baits trolled, - or medium sized top water lures(poppers/chuggers) on top.

Rocky points and sandbars with access to deep water are the structures to look for.

Early morning and evening fishing will increase your chances of success.

The lake does have Lake Trout and some rainbow - but success rates for these is very low in summer. Fish will be deep.

You might find the Ragged Falls viewing trail interesting. It is between Oxtongue and the Algonquin Park entrance.

The village of Dwight has a small general store/butcher shop, several bakeries (Henrietta's, and Erika's), a roadhouse (on Hwy35), and an LCBO. Dorset has locally famous Robinson's General Store, several restaurants, and an LCBO.

I agree that smallmouth bass would be easiest this time of year. They exist in Oxtongue Lake and many of the lakes along Highway 60 in Algonquin.

To target lake trout you'll need to troll 20-30 feet deep. Leadcore line on a trolling rod is one way to do it, 3 colours out. Some people manage just with bottom bouncers. Yes spoons make good lake trout lures in general, doesn't have to be 3 inches. There are lake trout in Oxtongue but not in great numbers; I think if you want to step up to the summer laker challenge you'd be better off at some lakes inside the park (or maybe Bella Lake north of Oxtongue, which is stocked). But only if you can fish them in the first or last couple of hours of daylight.

If you want a lake trout for dinner, be aware that there are size restrictions on Oxtongue Lake and some (not all) of the Highway 60 lakes inside the park, prohibiting keeping lake trout between 40 and 55 cm in length.

I've never caught a smallmouth. Many other fish species but not a smallmouth. We are really excited to get up to Algonquin area and hook into some battlers.
