Hello everyone,

Now that the ice has disappeared and the temps are slowly starting to rise, I was wondering what species I can target in late winter/early spring.

What species can I target in March along the shores of Lake Ontario/near the mouths of streams/creeks (Hamilton/Burlington)? I would love some tips on how to fish for pike in March.

Any tips/suggestions would be appreciated.
Rainbow
White Sucker
Perch (yellow and white)
small Cats
maybe Carp.
Welcome,

Deadbait in the spring works well for pike.... Just aim to mimick the forage.
Thanks for the deadbait tip. Should I be trying any depth/locations in particular?
You are on the right track with creek mouths ...

I would recommend throwing some silverware from the piers, doesn't have to be too deep, trial and error. My favourites are Little Cleos, Mepps Syclops and Krocodiles. I'm convinced all colours will work eventually with enough effort put in ... good arm workout!

And don't overlook Freshwater Drum in the springtime, they are good fun.

Good luck!
Thanks!

Has anyone ever had any luck targeting longnose sucker?
I am planing to try finding some pike this spring. In zone 17 pike is open all year.
As long as it swims it's ok with me . But I do prefer pike & bass in the weeds .
I got my second pike ice fishing this year and I have yet to get one not through the ice. Usually going for bass and the other people I'm with might catch one though lol
Hi Roxy,
You can target Pike at marinas, they will close Mar 31 and open 1st Sat of May. Some perch. But right now. Steelhead is hot.
