Hey,

I was packin up my fishin' bag and noted that one tool I use a lot has not been mentioned on the forum yet:

The Worm Blower………

[attachment=106]

I have several of these – a great device. Long ago I did use a hypodermic – but was a pain to keep it safely stowed in my bag.

The commercial versions aren’t that expensive…………. $3 or $4 and have a safety cap.

These are used to inject air into your worm so that it floats……… on a slip sinker or split shot set up it makes the bait much more visible to the fish (it floats up above your weight).

[attachment=107]

I’ve found that the best results are achieved by injecting a small amount of air (just enough to give the worm positive buoyancy). Too much looks unnatural............... Experiment – you’ll see………….

Can be a deadly presentation on a slow retrieve………… adds another trick to yer show...........

I’ve also found that this device can be used to inject air into small dead minnows, or to inject flavours/scents into any bait including worms (ie vanilla).

Cheers,

OldTimer

for fall fishing for salmon from Dollarama, salmon egg like yarn and scent from oyster oil . They are more effective than an kind of fresh roe or marshmellow. http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd294/bassfighter_album/IMG_0003-4.jpg

Didn't think of that. I got myself a Lindy Rigger for $4 after I saw MikeH packing one

Great for storing rigs, $4 well spent I think. Much better than the ziplock bag method I was using before that Tongue

Do not disgard old used cleaned paint roller, (new for $1)I used them to store my pre-tied trout or carp rig.

Aluminum die cast lightweight fly reel for $30

I just got this fly reel at DHgate.com(a competitor of Ebay - offering reseller direct from China) for under $30. DHgate has some bad ratings from buyers so be careful who you buy from. I bought the reel from mumu9r-fishing, since they have excellent rating. I was happy with the reel and the customer service. I was not sure how to convert from righty to lefty drag system and they sent me a video on how to change it. DHGATE policy is Seller does not get paid until buyers confirm they have received the product and happy with it. Some other US and CA customer also bought from this reseller. I took the plunge to try DHgate.com and it paid off at least the first time!

Watch a video about my review on this reel. http://s223.photobucket.com/albums/dd294/bassfighter_album/?action=view¤t=MVI_0001.mp4

Fly reel drag system is good, comparable to other $100 fly reel. Can also be lossen to palm our reel face.
The reel spins very smoothly and has two ball bearing. Some cheaper graphite reel I tested does not spin smooth at all. I know fly fishing does not necessary need a drag or smooth spinning. For those who wanted to fight with big salmon, I suggest get the next size up, the bigger spool will contain more line backing in case you need extra line to fight salmon. Otherwise , for river fishing, I am happy with the lightweight (145grms)YS-85 3.5" diameter model reel. The drag system will also help avoid accidental bird nesting.

weigh - 145 Grams
size 3.5" diameter for 6-7 weight fly line. The seller claim 7-8. Since it has infinite drag and lightweight, I can also use an 8 weight fly line, just shorter.

I was able to put 40 yrds of 12lb mono backing first plus 90+ feet of fly line. I got my line off BPS when it was on sale for $10, the white river fly line has two section, yellow backing section is way thinner than the main blue colored fly line. Main line has tappered section on both ends.

mumu9r-fishing have a complete set of aluminum fly reel 7-8 wt + fly line + leader for $25. but the fly reel included was around 212 grms. They sell their fly line for $11. They also have a lot of spinning and Baitcasting reel and lures. I am still leary on the total weight or drag system on these reel, I do not have the courage yet to buy any other reel. Daiwa regal 2500 spinning reel can sell for under $30, so I would not bother with any unknown brand name reel regardless of the number of bearings.

I bought a 10 bearing spinning reel 2 years back from a chinese reseller in Toronto for $15, the drag is just okay, good for bass fishing or fish under 5 lb. Though Shimano has 3 to 5 bearings, the reel drag system was way smoother than my Daiwa regal or the unknown china reel with 10 bearings.

Work with 1 or 2 friends and buy in bulk at ebay. Buying bulk only make sense to save money, especialy on plastics, jigheads, swivels, fishing line, etc....

There is a US mail box company just across lewiston bridge, they charge $5 per package to use their address for shipping. Many companies on ebay do not charge for shipping to Buffalo. Go fish Niagara whirlpool , then pick up the package of goods you ordered on line. Tires , autoparts , household goods are generally less expensive in BUffalo. The custom border officers are very lenient these days. The cheapest tire I got was $55 for a Uniroyal (subsidiary of Michelin tires) from Walmart Buffalo, all taxes installation, balancing inclusive.

Ollies Bargain outlet, across the borders just aquired some good deals fishing stuff from a company that filed bankrupt. I got some P-line flourocarbon 250 yards line 14 lb for $8. P-line fluroclear was only $5.50. Fly line was only $5.

Walmart USA Buzzbait was only $1.25 each. Was $1 last year. I got a 2 piece Daiwa stiff 8-20lb rated Baitcasting rod from Dicks Galleria for $22 tax included. their 1 piece also cost $22. Gander mountain 12' steelhead /salmon rod is only $50, on sale can go as low as $30.

Lebarons Markham yellow diamond spoon was only 75 cents, they have 3 sizes, too light for many application, just bend a penny to the shape and glue them to the back of the spoon with epoxy from Dollarama. The added weight will be more effective in running waters of river system such as fishing the Niagara whirlpool. Scrape off the front paint if fishing on clear water, no paint is more effective and can glitter more.

My Ex-regular fishing buddy is a reliable honest hard working Auto mechanic, He can work on your vehicle at his home in Oshawa during his sun and monday day off. He is a 68 year old chap named Vijay tel: 905-767-5708. He works at another mechanic shop in Markham during Tuesdays to sat. He is temporary lying low on fishing and spending more time with his over-demanding wife on his day off, so no fishing with me for a while. His rate is around $45 an hour and you can even supply the parts yourself. He will not fix anything if it can survive not getting it fix. Many mechanics are a rip-off these days. Just mention Joshua's referrals, and another fishing guy. The more detailed fishing honey hole you can provide, the less he might charge. HA! HA!

I got myself some of the frogs, the hooks look very very dull though (the points seem forged to be round). What did you use to sharpen?

RE: Tackle/Fishing Supplies..Tips/Tricks - OldTimer - 06-15-2012 04:45 PM

I like most anglers do prefer to use the custom made commercial sinkers………. when it’s logical.

However – in many situations it makes sense to use other things as an expendable weight.

Long term - Lead and cadmium are not really all that great for the environment… and do fetch a significant price these days.

Tungsten lasts forever – but the prices are really wow.

Larger old steel nuts and bolts you scavenge from your trashed stuff - are not as dense – are environmentally safe (they simply will rust away) - and a whole whack cheaper to use when you know most will be lost on the end of a dropper rig in snag infested (or new-to-you) waters. Just tie ‘em on the end with a granny knot or two - so they will release if stressed a lot…………

The fish don’t bite the sinkers!

Keep a few in your kit and try it. It works.

I bought a bag of this today at Fortino's for $3.99 - they never carried it before, so I thought I'd give it a go..............

What do you do to prepare this for carp fishing?

I'm considering soaking it overnight - then boiling it for about an hour?????......... sound close?

I remember hammercarp mentioning that a simple soak overnight should suffice.
