Algonquin Park Fishing Resources - zippyFX - 02-01-2017 03:07 PM

I have been considering hit Algonquin park for some trout and was doing some research when I stumbled upon a set of fishing literature for the park. It colloquially known at fishing set #2.

It consists of 1 canoe map and 3 booklets. I have not spent much time on the canoe map so I won't go into detail on that but it looks perfectly serviceable for someone with a canoeing interest.

Fishing in Algonquin Provincial Park: I found this a very interesting read. Though the writing can be dry this booklet is a nice resource on such areas as how and why fish entered the Algonquin system, discussion on invasive species. A good description on how the lake effect impacts fishing. This booklet is very good reference piece.

Fishes of Algonquin Provinical Park: This is a nice reference to have on the fish in the park. It is comprehensive but the details on the fish is not as structured as in The ROM Field Guide to Freshwater Fishes on Ontario or Peterson Field Guide to Freshwater Fish in North America and Mexico.. It does have local flavour to it which makes it worthwhile. My one complaint is about the fish distribution maps. The scale of the map is relatively small and mapping a given fish to a specific lake can be problematic.

The Raven Talks about Fishing: this book has a number of somewhat dated narratives (articles) related to to fish, fishing, and the fishing ecology in the the park. I found it useful but atimes difficult to read.

All said and told this is an interesting package of booklets which is very reasonable for the price ($11.50 + Tax + shipping). I would recommend this to people going to fish in Algonquin and those interested in reading about fish in Ontario

I was looking at this package just this past weekend. It's getting close to the time when we start booking our summer camping trips and Algonquin is a possibility this year. I would like to go try Restoule PP or Marten River PP. Does anyone have any info on those, or any other Ontario provincial parks with regard to fishing?
