Hi Folks - caspersphilly - 02-23-2017 07:32 PM

I am new here. I have a cottage near Huntsville and love to fish. I fly and spin fish. Oh ya, love to ice fish. Looking for members who are familiar with the lakes on Limberlost Road.

Hello CaspersPhilly,

And welcome to OSF.

Dig this:

That general area (Baysville/Huntsville/Dorset/Dwight/Algonquin Park) is where I spent many years both living and working. My family had a cottage there for 30 years. I’ve been going there since I was 4. Time flies.............. well over a half a century.

I did fish a few of the lakes in that specific area long ago with my father.

Three years we did fly in trips out of Bella Lake with Huntsville Air Services for specks and pike in the late 70’s thru early 80’s…flew to VERY remote lakes north east of there….. Good times. Plus a few times we dropped a car topper in Bella and the bass fishing was “good”.

We did “ice out” trolling in Walker Lake for lakers in early spring later in the 80’s. Mostly small fish. Still go to the Norseman restaurant there occasionally – great food and Les is a very good host.

I guess my favorite lake in that area was Oxbow – on its east arm. My lady and I stayed at a cottage there a few times in the mid 90’s just down East Oxbow Rd, about a mile or so from Camp Olympia. The top end of the east arm was (and still is I believe) surrounded by crown land. Many ospreys did live there on/near the cliffs area. The smallmouth fishing was absolutely fantastic then, and lots of them. I hear from a friend that smallmouth is still fairly good, but rock bass are now present (they weren’t)……….. have also read about pike being there now. I do recall the fish having lots of Black Spot………… no doubt due to the noticeably large population of Kingfishers.

A few pics from one my father & I’s fly in trips with Huntsville Air Services out of Billie Bear Lodge circa 1975. My dad is wearing one of their ball caps (was his fav). Those are the planes - I recall them having Cessna's, a Beaver, and new their end, a chopper too.
