Latest Ice Fishing? - FishGuy3754 - 03-13-2019 06:21 PM

With this winter being slightly delayed and extending into march this is one of the first years i have managed to get out ice fishing during march. Which got me wondering, what is the latest you have been able to go ice fishing? Also what was the ice thickness?

Just curious as I know out west/north ice fishing can last into april if the weather holds. But in southwestern ontario and the kawarthas it's more hit or miss each year.

I was last out March 3 and still had 7-10 inches of ice.

Last ice is the absolute best time to track down and catch jumbo perch on Lake Simcoe. I've been out on Cooks Bay on the last few days of March numerous times and on April 2nd in 2011. Ice thickness was never the main concern, with over 20" underfoot, but the rapidly deteriorating shoreline ice made entry and exit pretty sketchy.

Several times my group had to walk a plank or skid across 3 feet of open water to get off the ice, which by mid afternoon in double digits temperatures, had taken on an ominous blue/green color and could be easily dug into with your toe.

The secret to finding access to the ice in late winter is to look for a shaded north facing shoreline.
