Fluorocarbon Leader Material vs. Regular Fluorocarbon Line - MichaelAngelo - 11-08-2012 02:50 PM

Word on the street is that line sold as "leader material" is tougher than line sold to fill a spool.

I've been looking at the line diameters of expensive flurocarbon leader material and comparing it to much cheaper flurocarbon line sold on big spools.

Berkley vanish:

Model No. Diameter (in) Pound Test Yards Color Price
VPS4-15 (1053992) 0.007 4 110 Clear $5.99
VPS6-15 (1010821) 0.009 6 110 Clear $5.99

Berkley vanish leader material:

VLM4-15 (1071681) 0.009 4 50 Clear $9.99
VLM6-15 (1071682) 0.010 6 50 Clear $9.99

So 6lb berkley vanish spool line is equivalent to 4lb berkley vanish leader material.

No wonder it's tougher!

Unless the actual composition of the line is different, this'll save us a lot of money.

The Leader Material is a tougher Material than just the normal florocarbon line....

Not such a huge difference when your working on casting for fish under 10 pounds...

but when you start getting into trolling or casting for fish over ten pounds, with large teether, youll want the Proper Leader Material..

Leader material is mostly more expensive, because of this you should use it only as a tippet or when preparing lures or hooks...

I do stuff like this when I Troll For salmon in the Big lake.

When working for those 20+ pound'rs the florocarbon material really counts,in the beginning of the season (MAY) you can use 20 pound florocarbon, by the end of july those fish have grown into near 30 pound'rs and those teeth get big and tough.

by this point of the season, I move up to 50 florocarbon leader material. There is a significant difference, TO ME.
from the fishing line and leader material.

Jeremy is correct. Leader material (from a reputable manufacturer) is different than regular line. It has more abrasion resistance and a higher shock loading rating. It also is a bit stiffer yet - has less "memory".
