Chumming for Carp

From what I understand there are two big advantages to chumming whilst carping.

Firstly, the scent of the chum will draw the fish towards your offering and secondly, the carp will become more confident in their feeding. If enough carp gather, competition over the food source may arise.

I've read that for fish like trout, it's possible to feed them to the point that they're full. For big carp, this should be less of a concern.

I have chummed for carp in the river and found that it attracted a lot of chubs, and that was an undesirable outcome.

How have you guys chummed for carp in the past? What are your findings? What particle sizes do you prefer to chum with?

I regularly use a particle bait to call Carp in. I am about 80% done on a Blog article on what I use and why.

LOL! yes, but over here I use a slightly different approach.

Yes I have chummed with great success . I used boiled field corn . Three to five days in a row seems to get the best results. The amount varies with the size of the swim. For a single person about one 5 gallon pail over three days seems right. I have chummed a big area for a carp tournament with 500 lbs over the course of 5 days. Here in Ontario all you really need is boiled or even soaked ( for about 3 days) field corn.

There are enough guys out there that will recognize what you are doing and have no problem setting up at 4 am in your swim before you get there. If you are going to develop a swim it's a good idea to do it discretely .

I think I got a little confused here. I was talking about baiting a swim before you fish it. If you are talking about baiting a swim while you fish it you should just put enough in to hold the carp there. That is best done in small amounts at frequent intervals. Since I fish paylake style with bait packed around a baited hook I do this every time I fish.

Awesome tutorial. How often do you check/replace your pack bait?

I usually throw in a pack of jello powder as well, either vanilla or strawberry. It gives off a nice milky plume of scent as it sinks to the bottom.
