What parts has Shimano sent you free of charge?

If it is a old Southbend reel, quality could be very good.

Besides the handle, have you open up the reel to see if there is any corrosion in the gears?

Did you find that at our overnight bridge spot? I was wondering why it took you so long to grab a couple of camping chairs and a bag of food...
