Heading to jacksons point on Wednesday morning in search of some jumbo perch and maybe the odd crappie, just wondering what baits you think would work well besides live minnnows?
Jigs, small spinners and worms.
Good luck!
Small plastic grubs and all mentioned above.
2" tube jigs and jerk shads.
I have read that spring perch basically lie on the bottom as the water warms. I have caught about ~6 small/medium ones at 3 different locations this spring that would seem to support this assertion.
I was looking for Crappie at different depths and was using a worm tipped jig (1/32 - 1/16, with a 1.5 - 2 inch tube) and this assertion still seems to hold. Right near the bottom on all accounts.
I don't know your water and have only landed jumbo perch in the fall. So take this free advice is worth all you paid for it
Not sure about fishing from shore in Simcoe, but perch are not always tight to the bottom when we fished from the boat.
Believe it or not, sometimes you get these school of baitfish being attacked by birds, and underneath this ball of bait is perch. They can be suspended feeding on the underside of this bait ball.
Even if you don't see this, perch can be suspended a 2-3 feet off bottom in deeper water. We fish them with a 2 or 3 hook rig. Bell sinker on the bottom, then the first hook about 12" to 18" from sinker, and another hook another 12" to 18" above. That's the same rig we sure while icefishing.
Lots of big jumbos in the spring when the perch are busy spawning.

That's what we use at piers and lakes............

anyone know a shore fishing spot at Jackson's Point? I tried going there a few years back but crashed my car on the way at High St. and Highway 48. God I loved that car!
