My friend "Latimeria" from SoCalSurfFishing caught this 100+lb Black Seabass from San Diego a couple of days ago (Apr 17, 2012). I thought I'd share this here.
Now...if you think this was a fluke, last year (Nov 8, 2011), "mai tai" from the same forum was fishing with "Latimeria" in the same area and "mai tai" caught out about the same size.
They also regularly catch big leopard sharks and bat ray from San Diego.
That's bloody cool!
Bloody cool is right! I would take a bite of that fish right then and there! Fresh sashimi! The freshest kind! Ok maybe not of the 100lb fish, but if there was a smaller one hahaha
Of the fish I've eaten so far, sea bass is my favorite.
This guy must know what he's doing
. I want to move to cali or australia *dreams*
Tom (Latimeria) and Steve (mai tai) are both very cool guys to fish with. I spent an afternoon fishing with them last time I was in San Diego and we went after mostly small game.
I'll be visiting San Diego again in August. Hopefully I'll get to fish with them again
BTW, the Black Seabass (Giant Sea Bass - Stereolepis gigas) is endangered and protected in California with 0 harvest and immediate release. No chance in taking any bite out of those fish
Now...regarding sea bass, do you know what kind of sea bass it is? There are many fish sold as sea bass which could range from striped bass, black seabass, Chilean seabass, even some grouper are sold as sea bass. It's good to know exactly which one you're eating and ordering.
One time, I was at this expensive restaurant and on the menus was European Seabass. I have caught European Seabass before so I know what it looks like. Many people ordered the dish thinking they would get European Seabass. When the dishes finally arrived, I saw that the restaurant was actually serving Striped Bass! I wouldn't doubt they are serving farm Striped Bass either. I didn't make a fuss since I was with my boss and his peers and this was a free meal after a conference...but I was very shocked an expensive restaurant can get away with stuff like that so blatantly wrong!
I should have gone up to the manager and owner to complain later...but again, I didn't want to cause a fuss and embarrass my boss.
