Hey,

When do you think these dates should be set?

Should ice fishing entries be allowed?....... or just open water? Will the number of participants vary on this call? Or for that matter should kayak and boat entries be allowed........or just "shore".........?

I'm easy any which way as it's just for fun.

Chime in...................

I think the earlier the better.... I like to see the hard water catches.
I think any species should be allowed, as long as caught my angling methods Tongue

Ok...seriously...

I think the purpose of this challenge, at its core, is to encourage people to expand their fishing experience to all the species that Ontario has to offer. Certainly, some species are more difficult to catch from shore compared to others, but that added to the challenge and excitement of the catch. Also, seeing that this is Ontario Shore Fishing, I tend to favour the idea that the challenge should be restricted to shore fishing only.

Now...in terms of icefishing...

In many ways, icefishing are very similar to shorefishing. Although you are more mobile than typical shorefishing, the amount of water you cover at any one time is really limited to the number of holes you've drilled (or able to drill without having a heart attack). With shorefishing, you are equally limited to the amount of water to fish dictated by access, shoreline vegetation, nearshore structure...etc. I see many parallels between summer shorefishing and winter icefishing (I guess saying winter icefishing is redundant...).

Opening up icefishing for the contest can also encourage more member to fish in the winter.

So I support the idea to allow icefishing catches for the contest.

I also think we should start the contest on Jan 1 and conclude on Dec 31. For this year's contest, we can accept species already caught before we officially start the 2016 event...since we're just discussing this now...

It was fun watching the contest from the sideline this year...I may do it again for the next contest.
Soooo.......am I to understand that my raft catches will be ineligible, or is the issue still open? I do like the full year "open season" since I now have all the gear to get out on the ice.
There has not been too much scrutiny on how the fish were caught in the past so I don't suggest we start; in the past people have had interspersed boat/canoe catches without issue.
So in summary:

If its caught in season, of legal size, and by legal angling means and methods - in Ontario between Jan 1, 2016 to Dec 31, 2016 a fish may be entered. Fishing on the ice, or from shore, or from watercraft is acceptable.

I'm in...............lets do it.

I know Eli is a bit of a special case since he used to live in Ottawa and fish in both Ottawa and Quebec a lot...and now he lives just across the river in Gatineau but he still fishes in Ontario and also in Quebec.

I think we can (and should) make that exception.
And what's different this year is that in Zone's 16 and 17 Atlantic Salmon have an open season (but only catch and release) - so such fish from these areas and caught during he season may be entered this year.
