I have a much better idea of it all now, thanks! When we were out on the rivers, I wasn't thinking of stripping in order to tighten the line, I would use all my slack line to extent the drift. This would result not only in slack line, but drag in the drift.

What's the best way of drifting a long ways downstream? I will learn to mend Smile.

I have to remember to start the drift with my rod tip high, so I can lower the rod to extent without introducing slack line.

Next time we go fly fishing, I'll explain more. It's better to see it and try it in person than to explain here. Every spot present a little different challenge and it's best to go through it slowly in person.
