Low water scouting July 24 2014:

Even though today’s weather isn’t the “summer doldrum” model, we should still see within the next month or so - the lowest water levels for creeks and rivers in 2014.

This period is a great time to scout out or revisit your favorite, or future planned water course “spots”……… to see firsthand the usually submerged structures, and major flow obstructions. Plus you will witness the true flow of the “river within the river” (aka "thalweg") , and learn where the deepest points and pools are located.

The surface movement and standing waves of the high waters in spring and late fall can act as camouflage and mislead you.

You’ll also get an eyeful of the tackle gobbling snags (logs, trees, van seats, and shopping carts). Smile

Knowledge is power……… smile.

Cheers,

OldTimer

To add to the list...

You'll find out where those pot holes are located...so you don't step into them and go for a swim when the water is higher. Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin

Actually...I'm pretty serious about that...not funny at all.

Exactly.

. and I have seen - between the spikes of level this summer - that "my" home river has undergone some substantial changes in flow patterns, pockets, and depths in some areas due to the long term massive flows this spring.
