FISHING IN YORK REGON/SCARBOROUGH - dawife - 09-08-2015 11:48 AM

Hi there, I'm new to fishing; well did when I was a kid and what not, but went to a couple of cottages on rice lake this year and absolutely fell in love with it again, as did my 5 year old daughter, so now I have some gear, bought myself a tackle box and ready to do just some day fishing to finish off the season, I'm in Markham and was just wondering if there were any places that were family friendly that I could fish off a dock/pier/rocks etc... but also a little beach and play ground (bathroom) for when the little one does get bored? Also, any advice on Holland's landing would be great too as that is a shorter trip for us (not much of a driver lol)

Hi DaWife,

Welcome to OSF.

There are a number of member anglers here from Markham. Try searching here using the location.............

Cheers,

OldTimer

Bluffers Park in Scarborough can tick off a lot of the boxes you required.

Largemouth Bass, Northern Pike, Common Carp, Yellow Perch, Bluegill and Pumpkinseed Sunfish and Brown Bullhead are most common. You can add in Chinook Salmon in the fall, perhaps a Steelhead or a Brown Trout here and there. I've also seen the occasional White Sucker, and in the spring a good run of Alweife. There are a lot of Round Goby in any rocky areas and a Stickleback species I've yet to catch to identify. Emerald Shiners are often in the basin as well.

Personally, I don't keep anything at Bluffers. It's a busy marina with bilge waste constantly being pumped out of boats into the water. There's also the occasional oil slick. In the summer, there could be algae blooms in the back end and shallows of the marina. Drawing from previous experience, the fish in the marina usually has a weedy/muddy taste to them...not my taste preference at all. But some fish are large enough to be kept for the table, while some are too large to be kept based on consumption guide.
