I'm guessing the average size pike in zone 17 is all of 18" as a result of this stupid rule. Most of the big females are long gone from being easily picked off during the spawn. And you can keep 6 of them. Some folks at the MNR need to give their heads a good shake. |

Originally pike was not present in most of central Ontario - at all. They are considered by the MNR as invasive in this zone and a clear and present danger to Muskie populations - hence the MNR is actually promoting the catch (and hopefully KEEP) of pike. An excerpt from an MNR zone fisheries planning handout from years ago: Cheers, OldTimer <>< I once gave up fishing. It was the most terrifying weekend of my life. ><> See you on the river. |

RE: SPRING FISHING???
Yeah pike and muskies definitely cannot co-exist.
The Ottawa, Rideau, and St. Lawrence Rivers are prime examples of this. Like I said, folks at the MNR need to give their heads a shake. The same people peddling this nonsense are the ones stocking the great lakes with four (five on some lakes) species of non-native Salmonids. |
