You know what, the fish I labeled as White Grunt looks more like Pigfish (Orthopristis chrysoptera) instead. I looked at a larger image and saw little orange spots on the face of the fish. White Grunt has wavy lines on the face and a pointier face. The only puzzling thing is that pigfish usually has grey bars/patches on the body and these are missing in the fish in your picture. It may just be that the body colouring had faded.

Malama o ke kai

Caution - Objects in picture are smaller than they appear. I am genetically predisposed to make fish look bigger.

Nice catch - and plenty of different flavours and textures there.

What baits were you using? Shrimps?

No, definitely not spot. Those two are in the grunt family for sure. Just a little more difficult to call since it is hard to see any facial pattern, body colouring or fin shapes and patterns. But I'm pretty sure they are Pigfish. That's my first impression anyways but I then changed my mind to White Grunt.

Spot would be more croaker-like in profile with a steeper and more blunt head and it wouldn't be hard to tell there is a smaller spiny dorsal followed by a longer ray fin dorsal. Plus, a Spot will have the characteristic black spot on the back just above the gill plate area. This is visible even in fish that are long dead.
