Chumming for Carp

From what I understand there are two big advantages to chumming whilst carping.

Firstly, the scent of the chum will draw the fish towards your offering and secondly, the carp will become more confident in their feeding. If enough carp gather, competition over the food source may arise.

I've read that for fish like trout, it's possible to feed them to the point that they're full. For big carp, this should be less of a concern.

I have chummed for carp in the river and found that it attracted a lot of chubs, and that was an undesirable outcome.

How have you guys chummed for carp in the past? What are your findings? What particle sizes do you prefer to chum with?
