I think the micro adds a unique twist to the competition but I agree that it could be a barrier to entry to many (though I am not as convinced as you are that it is keeping people fron entering).

I would be open to having multiple or combined categories; there could be a standard, micro, combined component to the competition; though last year I think all prizes would have gone to the same person

Anything that keeps it interesting and fun is good by me.
