Speaking as a relative newbie though, I do fish with in-line spinners a lot. In fact I've seen them work on almost every species I've caught at all. Small spinners are what I typically toss into turbulent holes at the bottom of rapids for brookies, bass or whatever's hiding there. Casting and slowly retrieving larger spinners can be tempting for pike in a lake setting, and I've caught bass and panfish the same way though there are probably better choices for those. Of course, it doesn't hurt to tip a spinner hook with a piece of worm or something. Even swatting a horsefly and putting that on the hook of a spinner seems to help a little.
