The only thing crazier than shoulder-to-shoulder river fishing would be shoulder-to-shoulder river fishing with a few guys up/downstream reaching into the pool with their 40 foot fishing poles....

I have been thinking of stepping up to a 15 to 18ft beachcaster for distance casting and trolley rigs off the end of the pier. I think I'll wait until after christmas as these guys usually have a sale. Plus, I need to figure out what fish action there will be during the winter.

Mike, I'm still confused about one bit of the trolley rig.

The hook leader slides up and down the line on a swivel? Maybe with a bead placed just above the knot that attaches the sinker? When bringing the fish in, the whole weight of the fish is pushing up against the sinker knot?

If the sinker knot breaks, then the hooked fish will just slide off the end of the line....

Hasn't been a problem so far... no different to the weight being on the hook knot. I use those big beads I showed you at high park this week. I'm using 1 oz flat disc weights which have the loop on the top to tie onto.

My only issue so far has been fish breaking off by going around the pier legs or disgorging the hook using the metal rim off the drop net.

This reminds me of using a bamboo pole when I was a kid. I have a 17.5 ft. telescoping Shakespeare pole that I got at LeBaron. It's great for dipping an offering into small pockets in heavy weeds.

Once you hook into something, you essentially have it on the end of a whip. No reeling, just a bit of dancing...with a springy crane. A fish caught in the weeds can come flying back at you. But it's simple and fun.

it's a fishing pole, so I don't think it needs a reel. and it is telescoped pole, so you can just put it in your backpack.
