Fishing this long weekend? Where u going? Bait?
Hey guys/gals
Beautiful weather this coming long weekend. Do you plan to fish? Where you goin'? I may head out to Picton. For baits - I love using live worms or leech. I find catching more with live bait. I do use plastic worm "kelly fire tails" as well. Never had any catch with spinners lol! Maybe u can give me (us) a tip how? What do you normally use? Fish on! Abu Garcia |

RE: Fishing this long weekend? Where u going? Bait?
I'm headed into the Algonquin Park backcountry after the mighty lake trout. Probably fishing mostly with spoons and salted minnows.
Speaking as a relative newbie though, I do fish with in-line spinners a lot. In fact I've seen them work on almost every species I've caught at all. Small spinners are what I typically toss into turbulent holes at the bottom of rapids for brookies, bass or whatever's hiding there. Casting and slowly retrieving larger spinners can be tempting for pike in a lake setting, and I've caught bass and panfish the same way though there are probably better choices for those. Of course, it doesn't hurt to tip a spinner hook with a piece of worm or something. Even swatting a horsefly and putting that on the hook of a spinner seems to help a little. |

I spent the last two mornings (6-9am) chucking spinners off the end of the Bertie Boat Club pier in Crystal Beach. Steady smallmouth action — all over 2lbs. They are still a little sluggish but were slamming Mepps Aglias (Size 3 & 4 in bronze). Lots of fun.
Minimal boat traffic and the lake was like glass. Overcast, too. Couldn't have asked for better conditions. |

It's illegal to target an out-of-season fish... of course if one happens to bite while you're fishing for pike or panfish, and you release it quickly, that's fine, but it sounds like you had bass patterned and were hitting them... |

I was hoping for pike but found none. Caught four little perch in about an hour lol. But I actually have to drop the line under the dock just to get "the feel" of a bite - where the perch were.
East lake was too quiet, head home after 2 hours. If you are catching out of season fish steadily, as you mentioned, you are required to move location or to change presentation such that you are no longer catching the out of season species.
It is one thing to catch the odd out of season species, but another thing entirely to remain in the same location and continue to catch them. Not trying to be mean, but just pointing out the proper action an angler should take to avoid catching out of season fish.
