Mountsberg
Has anyone been at Mountsberg lately?
How is the water level? Last year it was terrible. No water was flowing over dam... |

RE: Mountsberg
No, never fished Mountsberg. What do you catch there and where do you fish?

RE: Mountsberg
You can fish at Mountsberg in the conservation park as well as the dam where the boat launch is.
There is pike, bass, some crappie. The lake is for non-motorized boats (only electric, canoes, etc) There is a conservation park as well with some interesting activities for kids. http://www.conservationhalton.ca/mountsberg Here is the google maps as well: https://www.google.ca/maps/place/Mountsb...ce11047b08 |

RE: Mountsberg
I was there 3 weeks ago. At the park side, the water level is extremely low.
After few casting, I moved to dam side. The dam side was OK. Landed 2 over 20" pike with perch pattern jerk bait. After that, I got a bit bored. Switched to UL rod and light reel with worm. Lots of perch and got very cute grass pickerel. Still fun to fishing there. |

RE: Mountsberg
Interested in seeing this picture of a Grass Pickerel from Mountsberg as well...because misidentification is very possible here. What features did you use to identify the fish as a Grass Pickerel?

RE: Mountsberg
Definitely a juvenile Northern Pike, not a Grass Pickerel.
1) Only the upper half of the gill plate is scaled (Grass Pickerel's gill plate is fully scaled) 2) Spots on the dorsal fin, anal fin and tail fin (Grass Pickerel's dorsal, anal and tail fins are not spotted) 3) There is no horizontal stripe intersecting the vertical stripes. (Grass Pickerel has a light coloured broken horizontal stripe that connects the light coloured bars. This horizontal stripe starts behind the eye, continues onto the gill plate, and onto the side of the fish. However, in some adults, this light stripe might be faded or lost) Usually you only need to check the gill plate for scales to determine if you caught a juvenile Northern Pike, Muskellunge, or Grass Pickerel. Look carefully at these pictures of Grass Pickerels. You can see that the gill plate is fully scaled, no spots on the fins and the light horizontal stripes connecting the vertical stripes.
