On a boat in New York - June 9 2013
Josh, fishfight, was generous enough to take me along on his boat as we ventured off for bass in the state of New York. The fishing was tough and slow. We did grind out a few fish.
Josh's first fish came on a spoon, worked close to the bottom. We could see nesting bass, but of course they weren't interested in hitting. We were looking for the post-spawners. My first fish came on a dropshotted green/grey plastic. A nice 2lb bass that I noted that it was barely hooked in the corner of the mouth. I played it to the boat ever so gingerly. Then our other fishing partner grabbed my line in an attempt to bring it to the boat quicker... I yelled "DON'T GRAB THE LINE" but he kept grabbing the line. Of course the hook ripped out. I was very upset so say the least. We fished on, sticking to our guns. Josh ran the spoon and I ran the dropshot. I got my PB smallmouth bass in 2 FOW on a dropshotted green/black tube: And josh got another fish on a bucktail he tied himself. We kept fishing hard and we spotted over 8 muskie in the 40"+ trophy range. We tried for them, but none were remotely interested in following anything . Damn you muskie! Near the end of the day I was running a Mepps size 3 spinner through the shallows and noticed a long fish take it... I got so excited, thinking I had hooked one of the ever-present muskie. Getting it boatside was a little disappointing! Just a pike LOL! No wire leader boys... I got lucky to catch the pike near the outside of the mouth such that the spinner's core wire separated my line from the teeth . I did not measure it, but it is definitely my personal best pike. I don't catch many of THOSE lol So there I had it... a VERY tough day of fishing. 2 landed fish and each one was a personal best. What I learned from that day: keep casting different things until your arms just about fall off. |

RE: On a boat in New York - June 9 2013
What the heck are you doing catching a #3 spinner in muskie infested waters...WITHOUT A LEADER? There is always the possibility that a muskie, big or small, find your lure interesting...
Playing with fire my friend...like I've repeated so many times...Man, you like to walk on the edge...I hope for your sake you don't fall too far and too deep off that edge...Once-in-a-lifetime fish only comes ONCE in a LIFETIME! One day you'll learn your lesson...I hope it'll be a 50" muskie Malama o ke kai Caution - Objects in picture are smaller than they appear. I am genetically predisposed to make fish look bigger. What the heck was I doing... I didn't go into the day expecting to fish for muskie. Then we saw all those muskie and I threw on a big spinnerbait and wire leader and proceeded to catch nothing for a long time and we stopped seeing muskie. So I went back to bass... But that's not a winning mentality. Shame on me... I should have gone with muskie or nothing!!! However, half of me was expecting the cold muskie to want small offerings. Hence my choice of size 3 mepps. I wanted to run a leader of 50lb mono, but I misplaced the spool of it. So it was either 12lb fluoro or the wire... still I should have chose the wire! |

Using 40lb mono for sharks...Even my 60lb mono was no match and I did have a 80lb wire on the end... Casting my frog lures for snakehead with that crappy braid and snapping off the lure on a snag (luckily the lure was snagged on shore)...remember how I said imagine had your Cobra Snakehead took that lure and your line snapped of that easily...after trying so hard, having such a tough bite...only to have your line snapped because of crappy thin braid? Once in a lifetime chance my friend... If your gear is inadequate in any way, shape or form...when that fish of a lifetime hit (either a big fish or a new species that you only have once a chance to catch)...you'll regret it...seriously... Oh well...you'll learn eventually...when you lost enough nice fish due to bad decisions... Malama o ke kai Caution - Objects in picture are smaller than they appear. Either ya gear up for bass - or ya gear up for muskie.
Oranges and apples................ Day and night. I pick the target and am quite happy with stray encounters whether landed or lost. Cheers, OldTimer <>< I once gave up fishing. It was the most terrifying weekend of my life. ><> See you on the river. |
