$3 Dollarama Storage Tube
I didn't expect to see this at my local Dollarama:

Expanded to maximum length:

Fully extended, it measures shy of 3.5 feet. Unfortunately, that means it won't be good for our 7 foot rods, but it will fit 6'6" rods!

Something to keep in mind Smile.

Just remember that these are not strong enough for checked luggage...they are okay for carry-on though, but some airlines (eg. Air Canada) do not allow you to carry on rod cases. You have to check fishing rods as checked luggage...which adds to your travel costs.

These are nice for local trips though when you want a little protection for your rods, or on camping trips. Big Grin

Yeah I forgot to add it's a bit flimsy when it's fully extended... I'll probably never use it for rods. It didn't say how long it extended to on the box, so I had to buy it to find out, worth the risk Big Grin.

RE: $3 Dollarama Storage Tube
I've wondered about document tubes for carrying rods in. Only drawback I can see is there usually made of cardboard but I expect a liberal use of duct tape would help. Alternatively, purchasing a length of pvc tubing in an appropriate width, with a couple of end caps then adding a strap would work too. I find the biggest challenge in shore fishing is lugging my gear about; camera bag, tackle bag, rod and biiiig net.

I got one of this last year for my kid to bring artwork to school. It's very light but may not be strong enough to protect an "expensive" rod.

Before my trip to California last summer, I tried to make my own rod holder out of PVC... I found it would cost me over $20 just to get the length of pipe for the main section... not even including the end caps. I was surprised pipe cost so much...
