If we really want to, I'll see if there is a way I have have someone bring it back for me But going on a big shark hunt with no previous experience is asking for trouble.

I can't see why we can chuck smaller bloody baits and see what bites...I've been told some bridges in the Keys are very sharky...to the point you don't want to step in the water at night. Bulls, Blacktips, Hammers...

you might have an issue with small gators stealing your bait too. My last trip we were plagued all night by three of four gators around three ft long.

Really nice reel!

Here's the reel I use for the big beasties, bridges, and piers,........... my Penn 49:

   

Not real big on capacity (300 yards of 30 pound), but its tough, has balls, and has yet to let me down.

My father gave me this reel about 1984 - it was used then. We went fishing on a Florida reef/drift boat one day and I said I liked it.......... he gave it to me the next day.

They started being made before world war 2. Maybe about 1940. I doubt it is this old. Most likely it's from the 70's.

I believe they were discontinued in the early 2000's, not sure which year.

The Penn 49's are discontinued, but you can still get Penn Jigmaster 500L, Penn Senator 3/0 or Penn 309. These are similar reels to the Penn 49. Michael has my Penn Jigmaster now.

With today's braid, you don't have to be as worried about capacity now. The only question is if there is enough drag on a smaller reel to stop a fish in time...before it heads back to the bridge piling or the bottom and break you off. The newer Jigmaster has 15lb of max drag.

Is your reel a narrow tall spool or is it a wider lower spool?

In comparison to the other dozen or so various conventionals I have......... I guess it's a bit taller and narrower...... much taller than my three 309s........why?
