Angler rights being threatened in Port Hope
This needs to be stopped before it goes any farther.

A cash grab with no up side. Heads down a street we shouldn't go!

Smacks of the "no fishing" ban a few years ago in Toronto's downtown lake front.

This is not under a local council's jurisdiction.

I can see why the MNR is opposed to this. They should deal with this.

I would support more intense surveillance, arrest, name/address publication, fines, confiscation of property, and other penalties to those "jerks" breaking the rules.

Is this a pass to Fish during closed season? That's messed up!

As I read it, you'd need the pass to fish during open season, in addition to a license. Closed season would remain as is. Basically a "pay-to-play" fee if you want to fish the Ganny in order to try to get rid of the bad apples

RE: Angler rights being threatened in Port Hope
All this move does is bring Port Hope money that they are not entitled to......... and penalize the law abiding anglers (the majority) who enjoy that river.

The criminal jerks (AKA bad apples) wont buy a pass and will break the law anyway - if not there, then somewhere else. It rids us of nothing - fine/penalize them through our existing laws and acts.

If Port Hope council is so willing to help and sincerely deeply concerned - use their local OPP detachment or police to enforce things HEAVILY in league with the MNR's enforcement folks.

RE: Angler rights being threatened in Port Hope
The bad guys may just by a pass to fly under the radar. $40 is not that prohibitive to thieves and scammers but a serious pain for those who like to try out new spots.

Last year I left my family in Toronto as I was coming back to Ottawa and had, for the first time, 2-3 hours to go scope out the Port Hope fishing. I did not catch anything but worked about 500 meters of the river and talked to the locals to get insight. During that trip I paid for a full talk of Gas (70L or about $70-$80) bought lunch (~$15) and snacks and drinks for the ride home ($10).

Needless to say I would not have stopped and spent any money there if I had to ante $40 just to get started.

The point still remains that the fish in question are "OUR" fish not Port Credit council's.

MNR would look foolish and incapable on this.
