Thanks for all the awesome replies!
 I'm thinking I may have to try long pants tucked into socks to deter the red ants from crawling up the legs  since I'm going gear shopping, what would be decent gear setup for all the mentioned species here? e.g. 6 foot 6 medium/medium light rod with 8 lb line. mono/floro/braid? corn and worm with circle hooks for the cats and carps? inline spinners for the trout and crappie? I'd appreciate any advice I can get
