Nice pier rig! If I didn't know where this is already, I would say this totally has that down south saltwater feel.

Fantastic system MikeH!!! Great to see you made it out today.

If it had not been for spending all of yesterday in the cold, wet rain chasing salmon around (the egg collection LOL)... I would have been able to join you!

Bail arm is open for the initial short balloon cast into the wind, but I usually feed the line out by hand once that is done. I didn't see any salmon at all today, I'm wondering of the run is over on that section. I did manage 1 Carp hook up on a ball of worms (for 5 hours of fishing, lol) but I couldn't net it!!

*I think I'm defintiely going to find some additional balloon float locations for the winter that dont require the drop net.

Live bait works really well on this rig, but zero chance of netting any in the canals at these temps. I drifted egg strings under the balloon, drifted them out, slowly reeled them back in half way and then drifted them out again.

I switched over to a ball of worms (medusa style) under the balloon after a couple of hours.

I would figure you would pick up a steelhead or two fishing a minnow so high up. When I troll with my buddy, all the flat line spoons ever get were shaker kings and steelheads. Maybe not the right type of bait? Maybe think gizzard shad, alewife or smelt?

Just thinking out loud.

I would see this as a very worthwhile pursue in the spring when the salmonids come closer to shore following the right current with the right water temperature...kinda like how cohos USED to come into Bronte Harbour in the spring under the right conditions...so my friends had told me (those who used to fish it) Not anymore though...not sure why the fish don't come into the harbour anymore.

A good size live Alewife would be the bomb for this rig in Lake O, but no idea where I would get some other than in TTP. I guess I should try this rig from the lighthouse point over there and float the balloon out past the end of the island sand bar into deep water. I am thinking of trying a really long trace and hooking it up onto the main line with a few PVA nuggets so that it doesnt drag behind the balloon, but swings down once the PVA has dissolved.

Yesterdays Carp was caught on a 15ft trace under the Balloon.

EDIT* I am tempted to try one of those 12inch plastics as the balloon motion would give it constant action....

I don't understand why people cast and wait with roe, marshmellows and yarn from the pier... the salmon are eating Lake O's baitfish! Why not just use baitfish!
